Time to End Federal Tax Withholding

Adam N. Michel, a Senior Policy Analyst in the Thomas A. Roe Institute, had an article on the Heritage Foundation recently, picked up by today’s Philadelphia Inquirer.

He writes to say why the system called tax withholding should be done away with.

I like the article for a couple of reasons. First, while the authors of the US Constitution established a federal republic, it has been twisted into a democratic oligarchy. One of the worst events in US history was the establishment of a permanent personal income tax, a fact completely at odds with the Principle of Subsidiarity, the basis for what is good about federalism. In short, while the US Constitution describes a federation of independent sovereign states, the federal income tax allows the central government to do an end run around the states, getting its revenues directly from the citizens of every state. This turns the states into dependencies of the central government in D.C., and every citizen into a chattel slave, working for the better part of the year to pay his tribute. A very clever economist, Milton Friedman, came up with a very clever scheme to bamboozle the citizens. He came up with the system called “tax withholding”, by which every business becomes a tax collector, the tax payers’ pockets are picked before the money even gets into them, and, most magical of all, when the citizen gets his tax refund check, he considers himself blessed. Michel wants to end this web of conceit and deceit. Bravo!

Secondly, I like this article because it mentions how truly sane people, the people of Switzerland, pay their federal taxes — with a check at the end of the year. Unlike their American cousins, they actually know how much their government costs them, and put their collective feet down when the government gets too greedy. As a result, they have one of the most robust economies on the planet, and one of the most pleasant countries in which to reside. More cheers for the Swiss!

So, take a look at the article. Then think about what kind of person you want to be: one manipulated by a too clever government, or one who really knows what is going on.
